I'm Thankful Today

This is going to be my running "thankful" post. See Jenn's post- I took this idea from her.

I'm going to add things during the day, as they come up.

1) I woke up tired as a result of having a great time last night! We are fortunate enough to have some extra cash for getting (1/2 price) Sushi once in awhile.

2) The car has remained faithful for several months, and got me here to work safely.

3) I just got some corn chips from the copy room, and they are packing a very satisfying PUNCH that is helping me to power through the mound of loose ends

4) I made some AWESOME veggie chili, and it was cheap

5) Julius is the cutest cat ever, and he likes to talk to me

6) Matthew came home and did all the dishes!!!!

7) I made some kick ace vegetarian chili last night that has reignited my interest in healthy, vegetarian coking. (Note: this probably does not make Matthew feel to thankful)

8) I have the day off to do fun things! The height of awesomeness- having Fridays off!

9) Update: I just looked outside and we have rain!

Halloween-

Last night, I dressed up as a hippie for Halloween. I did this crazy thing with my hair that involved several small braids and ponytails and a big bird's nest in the back. I have to say that my hair was my hippiest feature.

I went to bed late, then rushed to church this morning for a rehearsal, and did not have time to take out my hair. I vowed I would just explain the situation before anyone could wonder what the heck I was thinking doing my hair this way.

I forgot to explain.

When I realized, I started to, but the woman I was telling (probably late 40s-early 50s, really sweet lady) said she thought when she came in that "she would never think to do her hair that way, but it looked really cute on me." Hahahahahahahahaha!

I must know what you think of this article...

Over the past few months, Matthew and I have been surprised no one has connected Obama with socialism, because it seemed to both of us, that he was advocating some fairly socialist ideas. This article focuses mostly on the tax issue, and what I believe was a "slip of the tongue" when Obama spoke with Joe the Plumber.

What do you think? Is it a problem to have Obama's stated purpose for tax dollars as "spreading the wealth," rather than funding government programs?

Here's an article about Obama's defense on this issue.

To me, he doesn't appear to have any concretes. After reading the article, I was none the wiser, and didn't find anything in his statements that would convince me he's not trending toward socialism.

Calm and Rational is the Mood of the Day

:)... :)

Now that my rant is over, I can say rational things that make sense, and do not make me seem so angry. :)

This article articulates why it makes me so mad when people throw around insults about Sarah Palin. It is one thing to disagree with her ideas, which you're free to do, but it's another thing entirely to call her names and act as if she is any less intelligent than anyone else in the race (which you're also free to do, incidentally).

I do believe I like her because I feel like I can trust her motives. Same with McCain. And let's face it, the fate of our country is going to come down to the character of our president, because neither guy can possibly do everything he's promised. (But if he does, I will give him a gold star- if Corrie will let me have one from Grant's reward chart.)

We must be comfortable in the fact that our President has our best interests at heart.

Also, I have a question...does anyone know why feminists are so against Palin? I would think, probably somewhat naively, that this is what they want- a woman in a position of authority. So...is it because she got married and had kids? It doesn't seem to fair that they would only support a women who is like them, but that may not be the case. Does anyone know?

Political Rants

You all know who I support; no apologies for that, but this is really a rant, so feel free to pay no attention.

I was looking at some information gathered by a poll NBC sponsored. We all know that Obama is ahead, but this new article said that McCain has lost popularity since he announced his running mate would be Sarah Palin, first term governor.

Oh, the hypocrisy.

First term governor? First term Senator! Not sure if you've heard or not, but a governor is in charge of running a state, albeit a state that is not vastly populated.

What has Obama ever run? A state? No. A city? No. A county? An office? A business? No!!! He hasn't done anything. He hasn't even authored a bill! That's his job!

As long as we're talking about hypocrisy...the Obama camp released a pre-debate memo saying that McCain is ill-equipped to lead the country.

Who's ill-equipped again? In case you forgot, the President is also our Commander-in-Chief. I'm at a loss as to what experience Obama has that makes him a good candidate for this position. Who's going to keep the country safe? A thriving economy seems unnecessary if we're "protected" by someone who has no clue what he's doing.

I'm sick of hearing about McCain's "erratic behavior" and his "radical opinions." It's radical to tie yourself to a former terrorist-bomber and expect that the entire American public is going to let it slide. It's radical to expect that we'll just forget about ACORN, who's only defense is that "someone else is supposed to check the registrations we turn in."

Oh, don't even get me started on ACORN! Someone else is supposed to check the applications??? Almost HALF of the registrations they logged in some states are false! I'm pretty sure the checks and balances are not in place to deal with fraud of that magnitude. Blame-shifters. Jerks.

And really, let's not talk about raising and lowering taxes. Whose plan is going to cost a trillion dollars? Who's spending over a billion on the campaign alone?

And for all the stupids out there who would call me racist for not being fooled by his smooth talk, I'm pretty sure I'm not a member of Black Panther, who sponsored a link on Obama's website until he removed it because of bad publicity. Yeah, I'M the racist one!

I'm done for now. That's all I'm going to say, for fear of seeming erratic and radical.

We're Back!

And I actually got a tan!!

We have some interesting stories to tell. We had a local taxi driver give us a tour of Nassau, and he was so informative. We learned some Bahamian history and saw how the locals live.

We also tried conch... What? You've never heard of conch? You know those huge, picture perfect seashells? The really cool looking ones? Well, inside lives a conch...a glorified hermit crab.

And we ate it :)

Up above, we're standing in front of a waterfall, but we asked this guy to take a picture of us, and didn't specify that he should also get the waterfall, so hence I'm telling you there is really a waterfall there.

Once You're back up and running...

Tell me what you did during the power outage!

Here's what we did:

First, we walked around in the extreme wind. It was pretty cool. Matthew and I both enjoy finding God in natural occurrences, so this was just one of those times we could appreciate the beauty in nature, although in hindsight, it was stupid to be out while things were flying every which way. We stood and watched the siding fall off one of the apartment buildings onto someone's car, thankfully not ours. Our tomato/pepper/herb plants appeared to have been completely snapped off, so we picked everything. The debris was kind of sad. There was all kinds of porch paraphernalia strewn throughout the complex.

Second, we were able to find a store that was open, so we bought a case of beer. We did not think to buy any ice, so you see, our priorities were completely in line :)

Then our neighbors from upstairs came down, and we played board games by candlelight, with all the leftover votives from the wedding- thanks mom! We happened to have leftover taco meat and velveeta in the fridge, so I cooked it up on the stove, and we munched on tostitos all night. We also drank all the yogurt :)

It was very fun!

New Gadgets

Crispy cookies, with a little health thrown in

So I stumbled across a good combination today. I must be grateful to my lack of white flour, since it caused me to become creative with my bran cookies :)

I used the recipe for Peanut Butter cookies on the back of the Hodgson's Mills Oat Bran. It said to use 1 cup of Oat Bran and 1 cup of white flour. Thus, I found myself in an unexpected dilemma- you see, I usually have white flour, but not today!

So I added 1/4 cup oat bran (in addition to the 1 cup the recipe called for), 1/2 cup corn flour, and 1/4 cup wheat bran. I was afraid to add too much wheat bran because last time my cookies did not hold together well, and were all mushy.

The corn flour made the cookies crisp around the edges, and the oat and wheat brans gave them good flavor. Yum!

The Great Cake- Escape!

Here are some photos of the cake I made for Sarah's birthday. It's filled with a (very simple) mixture of cherry jello, cream, and strawberries. The frosting is almond flavored, and the cake is vanilla.

My Fortune

Matthew and I got Chinese food the other night, and I finally got a real fortune :)

It said: "You are the master of every situation." And Matthew's said something like "You are well-liked" or something stupid like that.

FINALLY! A fortune-writer who knows me!

And I didn't lose my cool!!

Hey, I am so proud of myself, because yesterday, I totally called on the Holy Spirit and did not lose my temper, even after a string of crappy things!

I stayed at work late (somewhat accidentally) to get things sorted out with this new program I'm implementing at work. It is already making my job easier, but it's taking a lot of groundwork to be it rolling. Staying at work late was not bad in itself, but we had to be back at church for band practice at 6:30, with a dish in hand to add to the potluck we'd attend after band practice. So...I rushed home, whipped up some shortcakes and whipped cream, and jumped in the shower. A little stressful, just to be in such a hurry. Then Thornton wanted to run through one song before practice, and we actually got into an argument about how to do the song (this has never happened before, surprisingly). So after that, I wasn't ready in time, so he left without me, and took my FOB to get into the building. I showed up literally 5 minutes later (couldn't he have waited?) with my master key to get into the building. I was having trouble turning the key, and somehow...I dropped the plate with the shortcakes and it shattered, sending cake and shards everywhere. My key was stuck in the door (I pulled and twisted!) and I was locked outside.

Boo!

So I took a deep breath and prayed that God would help me get this cleaned up, and make it through band practice so I could go home. Then it was Scoggins and Ben to the rescue! They got my key out and helped clean up the mess. Then Scoggins called Sheila to pick up some angelfood cake at the store, so we could still use my lovely lemony whipped cream.

I think God was happy I turned to Him first, and he sent those guys to help me keep my sanity.

When I went in a relayed all this to Matthew, he immediately said I could skip practice and go home if I wanted, but I didn't need to! So the day ended on a positive note :)

I made homemade...

MAYONNAISE!!!

I used to hate it, but in the past year, have really come to enjoy mayo, so I decided to try my hand at making my own. It is a slightly different consistancy than what you buy at the store, slightly different color, and totally delicious! I still need to try it out with some other ideas I have, such as using lime or chile infused oil to make it, instead of plain canola. I also want to try different types of acids- lemon juice is typical, but I was also thinking of using lime or orange, depending on what recipe we're making.

Anyway, we made the world's best chicken salad for dinner last night. I think we'll shore it up and add it to the restaurant menu too. I can't give away all the ingredients, but here are a couple that make ours unique:

orange bell pepper- adds a sweet and satisfying crunch!
a special blend of home-grown herbs from our garden

Youll have to taste it to figure out the rest :)

Idol

Hey guys-

We couldn't move band practice, so Matthew and I are not going to try out for the real American Idol. This is bittersweet to me.

Sad because I was looking forward to auditioning, and possibly moving through a couple of rounds of cuts- it gave me a rush the other day to get passed through to the next round :)

Not so sad because it was going to be a huge pain in my side to go to Louisville 2x in 3 days, and for us, driving out of town means renting a car. Plus, I kind of got it out of my system the other day.

So...I'm not going to be the next American Idol :(

We Are Preregistered!

So, we are numbers 147 and 148 :)

We will check in at 10:45 on Tuesday, then will audition sometime between 11am and 2pm. Up to 100 contestants will be chosen to move on to the 2nd round, which auditions from 2-4. Up to 25 contestants will be chosen to move on to the final round, which auditions from 4-6.

American Idol Auditions

OK, so here's the deal with the auditions...there are several ways to "get in good" with the big dogs.

Thanks to Emily, I know now that auditions are on July 21st, but you have to go on the 19th or 20th to get a wristband, which we are planning to do. Those with wristbands will be permitted to audition on July 21st. There are further rounds of auditions in September.

ALSO- and this is the important piece- our local FOX news is doing a Cincinnati Idol competition, and auditions are this Tuesday. The winner of this competition is guaranteed an audition in Lexington on July 21st- no wristband required, no questions asked. However, they are only taking the first 250 people to pre-register. I sent in our info.

SO- you need to pray that we are included in the 250 preregistered peeps!!! Also, help me find a dang song, already! (And an outfit)

More Kitty Fun

Jules figured out how to climb all the way to the top of the screen on the sliding glass doors.

I have trouble making him get down because:

1) it's too high for me to reach :)
2) he weighs so little, that it does not affect the screen one bit
3) he looks so cute and proud that he got all the way up there

The big fat piggy, Sinatra, on the other hand, likes to claw the heck out of the screen...

Kitty Fun

Well, our new little guy, Julius, seems to be as different as possible from Sinatra. He loves people food. For example:

NOT raw carrots :)

Folks, we did not FEED him these things, nope, these are the things he snatched while we weren't looking! When I say snatched, I mean that he jumped up and took off with half a sandwich, like a flash of lightning! He's not even big enough to fit that in his mouth. He had to drag it along. So, of course, inedible by the time I managed to get it back. Did I mention he's really fast?

Also, when I got to work this morning, I found his little mouse in my purse. He must have put it there because he loves me :)

Extras- come and get em'

I have some plants to give away. I planted my herbs from seeds, and many of them took.

I have tons of extra oregano, and a few extra basil plants. If anyone wants one of these, I can transfer it to a styrofoam cup and bring it to church.

I also planted poppy flowers from seeds, and have a bunch of extra of those, if anyone wants flowers.

Orange Julius

We did get a new kitty, and his name is Orange Julius, Jules for short.

He's teeny and orange and totally cute!

Guess what?? I got very excited about the picnic we had on Sunday, and we all know that makes me a little zealous, so I decided to make us a gourmet picnic.

Not Consumed!

Hey, we just got our government money, and we used it to pay off some debt we've been working on for awhile. Now we have eliminated that bill completely!! Go team! We're back on the Dave Ramsey track, and are getting a little fired up :)

To save money, we're also trying to get into the mindset of walking or riding bikes any place we can. I have been riding a bike to and from work, but I'm a little bummed that I had to get rides most of this week, due to the rain. And just so you know, it is WAY harder than I thought to just switch to different means of transportation...but I do believe it will totally be worth it in the end.

American Idol

Did anyone watch the American Idol fund raiser thingy last night?

I have been pretty shocked and impressed over the last 2 weeks.

1) Last week, the contestants were all singing Dolly Parton's songs. Very cool- love her. So she got to sing her new single at the end of the show. Her voice is definitely going, but she still has all the personality and showmanship she's always had! Anyway, her song was about JESUS!!! Blatantly Christian. Matthew and I were pleasantly surprised they allowed such a statement of Christianity...

2) Last night, on the fund raiser deal, the very last song included all the contestants, a large choir, and a band, and guess what they sung? SHOUT TO THE LORD! Can you believe it?

We Moved!

It's been awhile since I posted...geez

We keep waking up to the sound of territorial Geese honking, and that is oh so much better than being rudely awoken by loud, bass-driven music.

Our new place is awesome!!! Thanks to God for arranding it all!

And to Emily and Mitch, and Cat and Ernie for packing up our crap :)

We are moving

We are officially looking for a new apartment.

Our landlord is the worst ever, so we are packing up and moving out. We have a couple of apartments in mind, but Matthew still needs to see one of them.

We're hoping to sign on something tomorrow.

If you get a chance, give God a little shout out on our behalf, ok? We REALLY need to find a place.

I just discovered this.

I mean, of course I already knew this, but I discovered another reason yesterday...

When he came in the door, dripping wet, carrying 65 loads of laundry, and I thanked him for doing the laundry once again, I realized:
I have not done a load of laundry since we got married.

The Quality of Our Water

So I read Caress's post about drinking water from glasses, as opposed to bottles. Interesting...

Since Matthew and I are avid buyers of bottled water, and I'm a little bratty about my drinking water, I decided to check out the quality of the tap water in Cincinnati.

Our water is GREAT! It's in the 90th percentile! Who would've guessed? Really, they're treating water from the Ohio River, which we all know could mutate your arm if you stuck it in, but those engineers have got it down!

Snowed In!!

So we knew that we'd probably get a lot of snow today, but the boy and I didn't really stock up on any supplies and such, so when we woke up, we rummaged around, and have come up with our "Snowed In Dinner" composed entirely of carbolicious comfort foods. We both agreed that this is the best meal ever :)

That show is so wrong.

Everyone sleeps with everyone and backstabs everyone. It is totally entertaining, and I love it. Here's my favorite quote so far (keep in mind, I'm still on the 2nd season):

To-Do List of De-stressing Things

1) Carry a larger purse. This way I don't have to worry about which lip gloss to take, I can just take them all!- DONE!
2) Get more sleep.
3) Use a bath bomb at least once a week.
4) Exercise!- Amy, we've gotta get on this.
5) Play fun Nintendo games.
6) Move out of this crappy apartment! NCH dwellers, keep your eyes peeled for "for rent" signs!

I just thought I would point out...

That Sinatra (that cat!) really seems to like toilet paper. I think he believes it is his responsibility to move various objects around the house as he sees fit, and TP is one of those things.

The other day, I was in the kitchen doing something, and i heard Matthew start yelling at something- that something turned out to be Sinatra. He (Matthew) came dashing into the kitchen to say to me "If you ever see him going into the bathroom, hit him!"

The explanation was: He went into the bathroom, and came out carrying a full roll of toilet paper in his mouth, just like it was a normal cat thing to do. Have you ever seen a cat carrying a roll of TP in his little mouth?? Me neither. I missed it. Secretly, I'm hoping he'll do it again. :)

To Keep Ourselves Occupied...

Matthew and I have purchased an original Nintendo.

We plan to relive the glory days with obscure video games that no one remembers. Has anyone heard of "Hudson's Adventure Island?" My mom got it for us when we were small, and everyone I mentioned it to thought I was lying because they'd never heard of it.

You can imagine my excitement when I found this game on ebay for a mere $2.00

A Great Big "Obamapology"

Did anyone watch SNL (the first new one in 3 months) and see the opening sketch? It pointed out a couple of good things:

1) Every loves Obama- somewhat blindly, too, considering the next point
2) What is his plan? Beyond hope and unity, of course, what does he plan to do again?
3) Hillary is not an experienced politician, she has experienced being married to a politician. In fact, she was so close to her husband and his politics during his presidency, that he cheated on her, and she rode the ensuing sympathy into the Senate.

Take that Democrats!

My Epiphany

So here's something that I realized, and that I've been thinking about over the past few days...


Matthew and I have been watching a lot of National Geographic and Discovery channel publications lately, because the library has tons of them. It might sound kind of cliche, but we have been really discovering the beauty of God's creation. When we researched Thailand, we saw all kinds of beautiful beaches and the most gorgeous flowers ever!


Anyway, I was listening to that song by Ginny Owens, called "If You Want Me To." At one point, she sang " It may not be the way I would have chosen, when you lead me through a world that's not my home." Then I realized- this is it, folks- this Earth, so full of beauty and amazing things, isn't even our place!


We're going to spend eternity in heaven- this convinces me so much more, that I cannot even imagine how amazing heaven will be. Think of the most amazing thing about Earth or about the human body, etc that you've ever seen- and heaven will be SO much better!

Stand By Me

So, the reason for starting this blog is actually this story. I realized that I am full of funny stories and useless thoughts that I unload on people ALL the time. So now I'm just typing it.

Here's the story:
Last night, after group, I went to pick up Matthew from his rock band practice. They practice every Tuesday while we're having group. So I already knew it was Karaoke night because they try to force me to go to Karaoke every single Tuesday. This time, we went. How dramatic. I mean, you already knew I was going to go because what kind of story would begin with me skipping Karaoke?

So we walked up to the bar, like good, responsible citizens, and we started drinking and singing, and it was great. Eventually, the guys wanted to go out back, in the snow, and smoke their various cigarettes and other lung killers. While we were out there, we were all kind of standing in a circle talking, and I was kind of leaning over Matthew, who was sitting down, talking to him.

As I was leaning over, some random guy broke into this circle, and slapped my head! Matthew had him up against the side of the building in less than a second. I followed, yelling, to ask why he did that. I was so proud of Matthew! He totally stood up for me. But wait! There's more!

Both his bandmates, Barrett, Peyton, and Joe all stood up for me too! They didn't hurt him any more than Matthew already had by tossing him against a brick wall, but they made sure he was leaving. Later, Barrett said that he was right behind Matthew, holding himself back.

I thought the whole thing was great!
